Bacterial Vaginosis
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal infection characterized by an imbalance in the normal bacterial flora of the vagina. Instead of having an adequate amount of beneficial bacteria, such as lactobacilli, there is an increase in harmful bacteria, such as Gardnerella vaginalis and other bacterial species. This imbalance can cause uncomfortable symptoms and, in some cases, may occur without apparent symptoms.
SYMPTOMS
- Abnormal vaginal discharge: The discharge is usually more abundant than usual and may be white or grayish in color.
- Strong vaginal odor: Often described as a “fishy” smell, which may be more noticeable after sex or during menstruation.
- Itching or irritation: Some women may experience itching or irritation in the vagina and genital area.
- Discomfort during intercourse: Bacterial vaginosis can cause discomfort or pain during sexual activity.
TREATMENT
It is important to follow the doctor’s instructions and complete the prescribed treatment, even if the symptoms disappear before finishing the antibiotics. This will help ensure the infection is fully eradicated and reduce the likelihood of it recurring.
